Check Out Maya

Maya Azucena my favourite indie singer has a video on You Tube and she's singing my favourite song 'Hallelujah', which is well worth watching and listening to.

In addition I have been to the beautiful city of Barcelona, which I fell in love with last year and now would like to live there at some point in the future, Catalonia is the place to be. Anyway a mix will be whisking it's way to you within the next couple of days so get ready for that.

Everybody Hates Chris

To those of us in the UK, we are usually at least 6 months behind new shows in the US but the power of the internet levels the playing field and also rids us of the adverts (aaah!). 'Everybody hates Chris' is based on Chris Rock's upbringing in Bed-Stuy and for me it's damn funny and the music well it's mainstream stuff but it's funky all the same Stevie, EWF, Grandmaster Flash, you know the rest. In the UK it's on C5 on a sunday (with adverts) otherwise point your bit torrent application towards www.mininova.org.

You're Beautiful (not!)

I have read today that Brit pop whiner James Blunt (sings like a girl!) is in dispute with a producer chappy called Lukas Burton and his royalties are being put on hold until the matter has been sorted out. Poor Lukas feels that he should be getting a slice of the pie especially after Blunt has sold over 2m copies of his album as well as topping the US singles chart ( watch out Chico is coming!). Anyway Lukas has a myspace account (can't find it) and made his feelings known about the whole sorry affair. I had to laugh when I read it as it was typical record industry stuff, which has been happening for decades. Here's the link courtesy of the former pop empressario Jonathan King's website.

There's a New Blog on the Block

Ahem, not that I am one to bask in my own minscule glory but I have to inform you that I had a hand (ok it was purely motivational) in 'Feel It' the newest soul/funk/jazz (?) vinyl blog . Well Mr Darcy (couldn't resist it!) opens up with two tracks courtesy of Ms Candi Staton, who's back in the UK charts again with 'You Got The Love' (for the 2nd time). He's provided two deep soul tracks with plenty of details, which is what I like, so people let's support a fellow soul brother and check out Mr Darcy at Feel it.

Note: If you are up for some dub/soundclash reggae then check out Anchormix's diverse range of music, which is no bad thing in my book as it stops you becoming musically blinkered. Here's the link and if you like it then leave a comment and keep coming back.

Gordon Parks R.I.P.

Film Director, Painter, Poet, Author, Musician, Composer and award winning photographer Gordon Parks died yesterday aged 93 from cancer. I have to admit he did not look 93, no way but in those 93 years he sure squeezed in a lot of life along with 3 marriages. I knew him originally as a photographer as I had seen some of his work when he documented a black low income family in Harlem in the 60's. However he was best known for writing and directing 'Shaft' starring Richard Roundtree and featuring the music of Isaac Hayes. I was reading his full page obituary in the Guardian today and it made my mouth drop because he accomplished so much and was self-taught during a time when he didn't have full civil rights. I am hoping there might be a documentary on him quite soon.

I did a brief introduction to Gordon Parks a couple of months ago as his music was in the FIM Vol 17 review, which is here.
